They're filtered first by an applicant tracking system (ATS) — software that parses your resume, scores it against the job description, and ranks you against everyone else who applied. If your resume doesn't match the posting closely enough, it's quietly sorted to the bottom.
The fix isn't tricks or hidden keywords. It's tailoring: rewriting your resume for each specific role so the language, skills, and emphasis line up with what the employer actually asked for.
Why a generic resume underperforms
A single "master" resume is optimized for no one. Two roles with the same title can want very different things — one weights cloud infrastructure, the next weights data pipelines. When you send the same PDF to both, you're relying on luck that your phrasing happens to match.
ATS software looks for relevance, not just keywords. It compares the vocabulary and structure of your resume to the posting. The closer the overlap on the things that matter, the higher you rank.

- Mirror the posting's language. If the job says "incident response," don't write "on-call firefighting." Use their words where they're accurate for you.
- Lead with relevant experience. Reorder bullets so the most role-relevant work is at the top of each job entry.
- Quantify outcomes. "Cut deployment time 40%" beats "responsible for deployments" — for both the ATS and the human who reads it next.
- Keep formatting parseable. Skip tables, text boxes, and multi-column layouts that confuse parsers. A clean single column reads reliably.
